U2's recent performance on Saturday Night Live, which was dedicated to Joey Ramone, was excellent. They must've known he was ill, since I think the performance is originally a few months old.
if you gonna fuck and it's gotta be rock...it's gotta be lenny kravitz.
limp bizket and linkin park can be used when things get kinky....

btw...
for anyone interested, (handsome) dick manatoba formerly of the dictators and wild kingdom (and friend of oz) has a place in the east village and is having a tribute to joey probably next weekend. ross the boss(manowar), members of ......the ny dolls, the ramones, twisted sister(dee snider), and many others will be jamming on old ramone songs. it's going to be a charity thing for cancer research. i was down there last night and they also plan on having something at cbgb's in a few weeks with some very big acts coming in to pay tribute. if you're interested in manatoba's place, lemme know and i can try to have your names left at the door......

Good to see another deadhead here.
The '70 summer tour was a great one. i saw them at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, so can't argue with your choice on that.
My Best Show choice though has to be Pink Floyd's dark Side of the Moon show.
I've gotta give guitar to Clapton, and make Layla at least a close second for album

Im not a Dead Fan- but I sold shirts at a Glen Falls concert in 1980- they played from 8PM-1AM until the curfew hit- the cops came on stage to shut them down and there almost was a riot! Everybody bought Dead Head Shirts- what a nite- sweet!!!

Just surfed by, god help me, MTV and caught Sheryl Crow and then Natalie Merchant on Unplugged and it got me thinking about the sexiest female rock performers. These two have always been high on my list. So, the question is: if they were escorting, which women of rock would you want to book most?
Sheryl Crow ....yes, something about her...maybe her lips but i don't know.
now debra harry about 15 years ago and we're talkin.

definitely not a Deadhead (lived on the same floor in college with Deadheads who played nothing but - 24/7) but as the years become more distant I learned to like and appreiciate them more.
For per minute dollar value shows you couldn't beat a Dead concert. Allman Bros. too.
Best Guitarist - with all due respect to the many many greats, its gotta be Clapton on pure talent. a guitarist's guitarist. many of his peers felt the same way.

Very few people outside of deadheads recognize Weir as a great rhythm guitarist- at times exasperating as he stepped on a great jam to play "Little Red Rooster", or tried too hard to be a rock star, still his ability to fill those amazing jams was nothing short of heroic considering who he played along side.

carol miller worked for WPLJ in it's rock hey-day (early 80's) and WNEW fm in the late 80's early 90's. she married to some tv network executive. she's known for "getting the led out" a 30 minute led zeppelin special every night.

For some of us PLJ's rock hey day was earlier than the 80's- anybody remember Detroit Annie?
Was revisiting some early 70's music today and remembered the hardon I had for Joe Cocker's back up singers ( w/Mad Dogs and Englishmen), Rita Coolidge, Kathy MacDonald and Claudia Lennear. Ive always loved backup singers- anyone see the trio with Steely Dan last summer, very hot!

Yeah, thats seems like a good idea Oz.
Meanwhile, I find myself with too much time on my hands once again, so started going through the old vinyl collection, and one thing struck me: there used to be alot more bands configured as power trios( guitar, bass and drums). Admitedly, I havent kept up with R&R the way I once did, but it seems that the power trio is a thing of the past. At any rate, my question: who are your five favorite power trios and just to make it interesting, if you include a band on your list, you had to have seen them live, bands that you didnt see can be included as honorable mention.
1. Cream ( c.1966 Murray the K show at Brooklyn Paramount, I think)
2. Band of Gypsies ( Fillmore East 12/31/69)
3. Ten Years After ( Fillmore East 4/20/71)
4. Mountain (Fillmore East 1/30/70)
5. James Gang ( cant for the life of me remember, Stonybrook , maybe)
Honorable Mention: Beck,Bogert &Appice, Traffic( while not a power trio prior to Dave Mason, a great band),
Grand Funk Railroad.
Next time: Horn Bands

- Ozzy
- Rush
- Billy Joel
- Pink Floyd
- Depeche Mode
Stuff that I am currently listening to ALOT:

You have definitely pick some top notch bands my brother! Saw Black Sabbath after Ozzy at War Memorial in Rochester 1981, Saw Ozzy as far back as 1982 at the Garden when he bit the bat head with Randy Rhodes wailing!!! Saw Rush 2x in the early 1980's at the Coliseum. Saw Pink Floyd 2x 1980 at the Coliseum and Yankee Stadium 1995. Got both Godsmack albums crack them on the Long Parking lot ride home. Linkin Park- shut up song is excellent. Metallica- The Johnny Got his Gun Tune is my favorite!! Megadeath has a new album that is very mainstream did you hear some tunes? I see you picked Yngwie Malmstein - saw him with Alcatraz back in 1983 at The Coliseum(Got 4 of his albums)- this guy is one of the most underated Guitar players around- Occasionally he plays at local bars in LI and NJ. If you like Malmstein- check out Frank Marino or Al Demeolo. Joe Satriani is good too but he could not carry Yngwie jock strap!
i've seen everybody........at least twice!
how about black sabbath/van halen at MSG in 78? i sat up in the nose bleeds and david lee roth looked like an ant with a blonde wig. ozzy looked like a fat little ant.
dick...we gotta hang out. mettalica......lamour's brooklyn 1985. wasp and Yngwie opened up.
speaking of Yngwie....he opened for ronnie james dio at roseland ballroom back in december on a faithful saturday night. you see, i was supposed to meet this girl (who's been talked about a lot on jag and UG) that night for the first time after the show back at her place, but i had about 12 jack n cokes and 6 or 7 shots of jack by the time dio took the stage (hey there were 2 opening bands). my two friends almost had to carry me out of there and drive me home...well they did drive me home, i think. anyway i wound up i standing up this 21 yr old girl (who i'm sure was having a few herself and didn't miss me) and had to take a day off from work (well 3 days off) during the week to meet this girl.
moral of the story.......i haven't a fucking clue except that......that girl became a major pain in my ass.

BUSH- "Speed Kills"- I do not like BUSH, but this one is very good!!
SYSTEM OF THE DOWN- "Chop Suey"- This is an extremely wacky song running the spectrum with various styles- it grows on you quickly!!

Reminds me of Dandy Don Merideth- LOL- Your right bro. You ever listen to some good tunes and it reminds you of your favorite provider- Thats what Rock does for me!
While I respect Carl M's right to listen to whatever music he enjoys, I thought I might throw out the names of some artists that aren't necessarily in heavy rotation on K-Rock:
The Strokes: "Is This It" is a phenomenal album, like a cross between the Velvet Underground and the Stooges.
The Shins: "Oh, Inverted World" is the pop masterpiece of the year, many different sounds coming together to form memorable tunes.
Stephen Malkmus: "Stephen Malkmus" is the first solo record by the lead singer of the now-defunct Pavement. The catchiest record of the year, with some seriously understated yet nimble guitar playing.
Obviously, as with all forms of art, YMMV.

Personally, I like Rollins better in the mid 80's when he was with Black Flag. But yah, he still kicks ass at 40 sumpthin. Hell, everything I needed to know in life I learned from his music (and spoken word, of course)

All of it coming back in a hazy dream... college radio. Hanging out with "Scottso" and thinking that was just so rad. Jealous of Tony because he had made a connection with Roger Daltry and somehow kept getting tickets delivered to whisk him some place The Who was playing.

Just a quick report on Rock and Roll in Vermont. Last night in Burlington, Phil Lesh and Friends completely burned down old Memorial Auditorium. From Warren Haynes' new readings of "Blue Sky" and "Into the Mystic" to Phils reworking of "St. Stephen" and stunning rendition of "Stronger Than Dirt"- this band led by the old psychedelic warrior( with due homage to fallen comrades), made my ancient Deadhead genes begin to glow with the old fire. Two other amazing highlights, Rob Baraco's eerie, powerful, scary nod to Jerry on "Liberty" and an acid flashblack I had of Duane Allman during "Blue Sky". I wont even go into the lovely, twirling young women who for thirty years have brightened up the shows.
Take care

Ozzy,
The problem with your pic may be that the file is too large (it is around 3k). Or it could be that geocities "blocks" out direct links to files saved onto their server. This is something that Angelfire does. If I paste the url to your file into my browser and then pull it up, the image gets cached and then appears.

Gene use to be a neighbor of mine. This was in the 80's. We didn't speak too often, but I got to know him well enough to know you can never tell if he is being on the level or kidding around. He can be very serious, and then switch gears on you without giving away the fact that he's switched gears on you, and you're buying in to all this horse shit and he's smiling at you, and then you catch on and its like.... "Hey! Wait a minute... are you putting me on?" No answer, all you see is a smile and then his back.
I don't know what that must be like to deal with long term. He'd either leave you constantly amused, or wanting to thump him. :)
One thing I did figure out though, without having to say a word to him, he goes though women like most guys change underware.
Apparently, he has an "understanding" with his long term girlfriend about such activities.
BTW, in person "off duty" he just says, "Hi, my name is Gene." Just like anyone else.

Rush should be in without a doubt. Hopefully they will tour this summer after an album release or so the rumor says...
it's nice to see that the mets have adopted Joey Ramones version of "what a wonderful world" as their new theme song and a sort of tribute to NYC.
satchmo would be proud (http://www.joeyramone.com/wonder.ram)

Rush really deserves it. I mean basically they are a three piece band, and look at what they have accomplished!
I am 39, so I grew up with them, Neil Peart is the best. The songs had so much to say, I mean one listen to 2112, and you were headed for the dictionary.

I could explain it, but this is nicer and easier:
http://www.thestranger.com/1999-05-06/excellent9.html
Peart is an avid reader. Many of his song lyrics are lifted from the classics.
Imagine when in high school I had to read Samuel Taylor Coleridge's work Kubla Khan, and remembered Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome did decree.
When I found out that the 'pleasure domes' were meant to represent women's mammaries, I was really blown away!

2112 - One of my favorite albums of all time.
The Fountainhead - One of my favorite books of all time.
Same themes are found in both works as is accurately posited by the author in the above link but he misses the boat entirely by stating that the individual that finds the guitar in 2112 thinks it can revolutionize the entertainment industry.
2112 and the Fountainhead are both about the individual, his ability to create art, thereby expressing himself and eschewing the idea of sacrificing yourself to conformity out of altruism for the good of society.
2112 and the Fountainhead posit that society always benefits from the individual who breaks with conformity out of his own sense of ego and creates not only art but also opens the gates of expression, innovation and ideas.
for a doppy 15 yr old, the only way to figure it all out was to smoke a joint and put on your headphones.
now with the internet.......it takes all the fun out of getting high.
mij317 has the more correct of the two. that the part about "creating art" and "expressing himself or ones self" is the same answer Neil Peart has given in past interviews.
btw...that link dan posted has the wrong explaination for "the twilight zone" as well. it was based on an actual Twilight Zone episode in which there was a martian with three eyes. if you read the lyrics you see the rod sterling influence.
The Twilight Zone
Lyrics by Neil Peart
A pleasant faced man steps up to greet you
He smiles and says he's pleased to meet you
Beneath his hat the strangeness lies
Take it off, he's got three eyes

At least he acknowledges that "Something for Nothing" are words to live by.
Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days
Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer
To the question you have found
Looking for
An open door
You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be
What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song
You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be
Ok, my evening is mapped out. Spark up the fireplace and a joint, crank up the stereo and spend an evening staring into the flames, listening to the tunes and philosophising. (ahhh...university life - except this time it will be chivas instead of meister brau - LOL
RUSH had maybe the three best pure musicians in rock.......period.
they also turned out a lot more hits and created their own genre of music that not too many could copy or accomplish. YES being somewhat close and they were nothing to sneeze at either when it came to composing music and their musical abilities. YES also deserves to be in the R&R HOF as they were early pioneers in creating classical music with a hard edge. i'd like to see curt kobain write something like "Ritual-Nous Sommes Du Soleil"......he couldn't even play it.
Ozzy and black sabbath started a whole new genre of music that had more followers and way more influence on those who came later in their foot steps. heavy metal also out lasted punk by about 10 years.
and the ramones are one of my favorite bands so it's no slight on them.
Rufus Moses
04-02-2002, 06:04 PM
Both punk and heavy metal are still alive...albeit in the form of mainstream music. It is impossible to say which will live longer...and at times it is impossible to tell them apart...e.g. when does speed metal become hardcore...and vice versa?
What made the Ramones great was that they rediscovered what was always true about rock...that the artistry in rock has nothing to do with technical skill or compositional complexity and everything to do with direct and powerful expression.
Yes wanted fuse a classical music that never was ("classical" is a modernist fiction), with a rock music that never can be (trading its soul for the imagined riches of "quality"). To misinterpret rock music in such a fundamental way is artistic sin...and should disqualify them for any award with the word "Rock" in it.
The Ramones understood this. So should any Ramones fan.
i'm not the expert who classified YES as rock n roll but if brenda lee, hank williams and billie holiday qualify, than YES should also.
i don't know how they determine who gets in and who doesn't.....i'll only say that they have no fucking clue what they're doing. they sound like the grammy's when they awarded the first ever heavy metal grammy to jethro tull over metallica (in '87?) who had their "black" album nominated. an album i should point out that sold something like 20 million copies and spawned about a half dozen hits.
sam & dave on tour together in the summer of 2002.
(not the old "blues bros" team...... the former lead singers of van halen)
Hey, hey, take it easy on the Yes-bashing. Their only fault was burying their noses in their schoolbooks while the Ramones were cutting class and playing with fire. Yes were definitely artists, though, and both bands were rock 'n roll. What's wrong with trying to expand an art-form in a certain direction (which is what both bands tried to do)?
As far as Rush goes, they strung together about six albums in a row in the late 70s/early 80s that were second to none. My personal favorite was Permanent Waves. The song "Natural Science" brought me to my knees.
behind bands like Zeppelin, the who, the stones, pink floyd and the beatles, who were all legendary bands equal to none......
rush and yes were right there in the same very top shelf catagory as..... the ramones, van halen, black sabbath, metallica, boston, kiss and aerosmith. . . . maybe a few others as well who all dominated the industry or paved the way for many others.
of course that doesn't include those more known as solo artist who also have a few legends....hendrix, billy joel, elton john and of course the king himself......Elvis.
now i know there's music genres that fall under the rock n roll catagory that i'm leaving out simply because this is ROCK CORNER and it’s about hard rock/heavy metal, and not blues, dance or POP, or else i'd list MJ, madonna, buddy holly, little richard, wilson pickett and aretha franklin...among many others.
I think the RnR HOF is making a serious mistake in not considering bands like Sabbath, Rush, Yes or even Ozzy (by himself) for admission…. Although Oz told them to "shove it" last year when for the 4th straight yr they refused to even put him (or Sabbath) on a ballot that consisted of the “bay city rollers” and “the average white band” (AWB)….. both of whom didn’t even come close to making the final cut. I’m curious to see if Van Halen makes the ballot next year when they become eligible.
Oz fest tickets on sale today (sold out).... july 19- 20th PNC bank arts center. (garden state arts center)
speaking of the prince of darkness.... it appears that due to legal BS Ozzy's original recordings of 'blizzard of Oz' and 'diary of a madman' have been remastered with a different rythym section (bass and drummer) so as to avoid an on going royalty payment dispute with Lee Kersley and Bob Daisey ( the original drummer and bass player).
the old original recordings will no longer be in print nor available, so if you got em...save them, they are now collectors items.
Note: Randy Rhodes guitar tracks will remain intact on both albums.
