As many of you are already aware, I have stepped back from spending the innordinate amount of time I used to moderating every section on this site by myself. A few years back, one member stepped up to the plate and helped to take over some of the duties, but eventually tired and left. A few other guys came and went, none of them really doing much to lighten the load. Recently, because of personal matters, I had no choice but to step back even more. Fortunately a group of long term UG members agreed to spilt up some of the duties and to meld into a UG Staff and share some of the weight. But today, they pretty much let me know that it was becomming too frustrating dealing with all the issues, complaints bickering and all getting nothing in return, so the time they will continue to carry on is limitted. I don't know what we are going to do, but if/when I figure it out I'll write more on this subject. In the meanwhile, I came across an interesting item and I figured here is as agood a place as any to post it:

slinky, great job for creating and maintaining this board. Of all the hobby boards out there, UG has been one of the few good ones. I couldn't imagine having to deal with all the issues of running a board as large as this and with as many personalties as there are on here. Having to be part APM/babysitter/benevolant dictator can't be easy. Bravo Zulu to you Slinky, Allen, and the UG Staff.

I really can't say I had a bad time in the streets, but if I had not look towards the future, the streets would have overtaken me.
Did not like to change, would have liked to have remained where I was, but time does not stand still for anybody, and especially not me.

Over ten years ago, when I first started, I would have never thought I would have arrived at this station which I now find myself in. But one thing leads to another, and if we make wise choices, hopefully, the future will be better than the past. The best we can do is to hope.

I don't mean to bring negativity into this thread, but I think its a shame that the board hasn't (at least as long as I've been here) been what it could. I think that there was far too much bashing, sniping and all-out personal attacks amongst the community. Over time it got to the point to where I wondered - why would I bother to share info. on a place or a provider I've just seen when people can be so nasty to each other and seemingly indifferent to the fact that there are real people behind usernames? Mabye its just me, but it seems that the angry, sarcastic jibes that were a constant really brought the board down.

That being said, its been a pleasure to be a part of the community you started. Sorry to see it evaporate.

A lot of really smart and fun people are here and it is like a virtual schoolyard with some supervision by an all knowing teacher who shows up when you least expect it.

Let's be serious: PPC traffic pays at about $5.00 per thousand. If we were lucky, there would be 500 clicks a day out of here. That would led to a total income of $75 per month. More lileky would be about 50 clicks out of here a day leading to $7.50 a month. Not exatly meaningful

If this were a democracy and we were to vote which its not and we arent, I would say to have a subscription price for all members. That way there might be somthing to give back, either as cash or free membership to those that would moderate. I would think that the more serious people that would do the most contributions would join and it might cut down on the issues, complaints and bickering. But thats just my opinion and I have been wrong before.

While you can't do anything about the time consuming effort it takes to read thru all the threads and edit/delete posts.... If you don't read or ignore the bothersome *****s and complaints it'll probably make the job allot easier. What are they gonna do.... impeach you?

Just edit by the rules and ban those frequent offenders and forget about the complaints. No one invests anything here but time, no one pays the bills cept for the advertisers and the VERY few who donate. Since UG doesn't offer protection to advertisers and just the right to place ad posts, you can forget their pain in the ass complaints too unless it pertains to their ads.

Since the boss is a little out of the loop I've seen some of the *****s comming in over this thread and I have to say that I can not imagine why anyone would put up with the vitriol, backstabbing and outright lies and nastiness thrown at this guy.

If this place goes away I will miss it as much or more than anyone, but I can't say if it were me that I'd give a shit about anyone here if I sweated blood for years and what I got in return was 35,000 people who thought I owed them rather than the other way around. When those of us who are currently the group moderating spoke last week before telling the boss we were going to be stepping aside, we all thought that it just doesn't make sense to make such a huge effort for a group who doesn't care and thinks they are entitled to everything and more. I'll step out of line and say that I know the ownership of this place really appreaciates those who really have stepped in and helped in one way or another, but the size of that group is beyond shockingly small. The one thing which I have comfort in is knowing that for my personal loss should this place go away pales in comparrision to the loss which will be suffered by those who least show their appreciation for what they have taken from this place.

This place unlike most other boards and certainly the high profile boards allows, allows anyone with an ***** addy to join and be privy to unedited, unbiased, unprotected reviews without having to pay a premium or write a number of reviews to see the "juicy details" as the other popular boards do.

I advised a couple years ago that perhaps a few hundred, a thousand or maybe more of the most valued members be grandfathered lifetime access and the rest be forced to pay a membership fee. That would eliminate all the nonsense and assholes while still maintaining enough membership to keep the board thriving. It could also pay for staff and allot of headaches.

There was Internet Relay Chat before the bots, the one I was involved with was called Mirc and I think it is still out there but I digress...... and perhaps this was already done way back when but it seems not.....

Why not appoint moderators in their own boards, they would need a separate identity like UGStaff114 from the identity they use to post, but with such a set up the main staff could moderate the moderators like the Supreme Court ... and spread the load.

I just dont want this board to go it is too valuable... and still represents what the original concept of the Internet was an open, free, forum to exchange ideas and information ....

As a relative newbie to this forum, I have come to appreciate all the hard work put in by Slinky and the other moderators. I am a member of another forum as well and am quite close with some of the moderators there and can tell you that sometimes it's a thankless and unappreciate job especially when you have to deal with all of the whiners and complainers. As with the other board, the information that helps us other members out is priceless. It was fun while it lasted.

Running this board must have been a thankless task. For a while, it probably was a labor of love. Then it must have gotten to be tedious. Now, obviously, it is in need of life support. I don't post much, nor have I visited much in the past year. However, I learned a lot and took much enjoyment from reading the posts of some very creative and insightful folks. The UG get togethers in NYC a couple of years ago were fun, but very few of the attendees are still members. In fact, Ozzy is the only person (other than SB) I remember meeting who is still here. I hope this board finds a new lease on life -- to my way of thinking, there is nothing out there that quite measures up.
