Police Hope To Take Solicitors' Cars As Deterrent
November 13, 2005
WASHINGTON -- D.C. police have asked for new powers from the city council to allow them to seize the cars of so-called "Johns" who pull up and pay for sex, News4 reported.
'If a John drives into the District of Columbia and is caught soliciting prostitution from an undercover agent, we then seize that person's car and impound it," said Jack Evans, a councilman.
Under the proposed changes, police would be legally allowed to hold the cars for one day, but Evans said that is long enough.
"Most of the Johns are men and they can go home and tell their wives or girlfriends, 'Honey, I lost the car.'"
The focus is on street prostitution in the Logan Circle and Shaw communities, News4 reported
Police are also enforcing laws that bar people from standing in a street or holding up the flow traffic.
The pending legislation would require mandatory minimum prison terms for repeat offenders.
Those who have their cars impounded would have to pay $150 to get them out.
