(CBS4) DENVER Police recently busted a string of massage parlors officers said were fronts for prostitution. The six month investigation led to dozens of arrests. Investigators said 16 illegal massage parlors have been shut down.

Police said in many cases, the women came from Asian countries. They were smuggled into the United States and were forced into prostitution at places like the Ivy Spa on S. Holly in Denver.

Detectives said Denver is often a stop between the East and West coasts. Women stop in Colorado to make money before moving on to other cities.

Denver police released a videotape showing some of their recent raids on the suspected massage parlors, including the one at Ivy Spa.

"We're here because we suspect prostitution here," one officer said on the tape during a bust at Ivy Spa.

Officers found condoms, sexual lubricants and sex toys in the spay. Police also found lots of cash.

"This is an organized crime we're dealing with," Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman said. "It's throughout the country and it's a global issue."

Investigators said some of the woman arrested had California ID's, but their true homes are overseas.

Police suspect a global ring. Smugglers allegedly bring women to the U.S. and force them into prostitution to pay off their debt to the brokers who brought them to U.S.

"We've gotten some information about how the operation generally works and how they're brought into the country, how they're smuggled into the country," Sgt. Mark Fleecs with Denver police said.

The woman arrested refused to tell officers about the details of the alleged prostitution ring.

Police have shut down 16 of the 18 parlors they've investigated. Investigators said they suspect at least 40 parlors and spas in Denver are running illegal prostitution businesses.

It is also a problem in other Colorado cities. Last week, CBS4 reported on the police bust at a spa in Greenwood Village.

Generally this has been the Korean operations. There were reports last year of an ongoing 2 year or so, which was "leaked" when some local LE made an arrest that revealed some details. After that, the Korean places started getting busted.

Aside form the Greenwood Village place, this report is old news re-hashed at election time. Same story ran two months ago as well (16 places was 14 then, I think). The Greenwood place had chinese workers but also was tied to Korean owner based on what I heard.

There are plenty of places open and busy.

Denver inherits global curse

Recent raids on Asian massage parlors in Denver spotlight an ugly aspect of the international sex trade: many women are virtually enslaved to fill brothels worldwide.

Asia long was a source of women for traffickers, but instability in the Soviet Bloc and the Balkans opened new supply sources for organized crime. In Europe, it's said to be at least a $7 billion-a-year business largely controlled by the Russian mafia.

Offers of jobs abroad snare many destitute victims (some are ******** girls), who are brutalized, held prisoner and shipped to Western Europe, the Middle East and Far East. Threats or shame keep many silent, according to a 2002 report by the International Organization for Migration. Only about 4 percent of women interviewed for one study knew they'd be prostitutes. Women were often moved and resold to other brothels, adding to huge "debts" they had to work off. Many weren't paid at all.

Trafficking also enables the Russian mafia to gain control of brothels in Western European nations where prostitution is legal.

Denver police estimate prostitution is a $20 million-a-year industry locally. Of 40 locations targeted in the six-month probe, 18 were raided, resulting in 35 arrests and 16 parlors shut down. But no one's yet been charged with trafficking.
