Just curiosity.

I created a new email account with hotmail when I joined this board (couple weeks ago?). I've never given it to anyone, with one exception, and I didn't sign up for any directories (it's annonymous after all). I only use this email for this board. The exception was that I gave it to Julie's site when I tried to register as a member (I do have a pin).

I just got spam from "susan69@soton.ac.uk", advertising a porn site.

Where did they get my address?

Does UG make their email lists available? Do they (gasp!) sell them? Does Julie's? Did the spammer use UG's email system to send this?

No accusations or anything, I really don't care. This is the best board I've found. I'm just curious. (No jokes about Marv here!)

Only with a Hotmail account, maybe Microsoft are selling their lists? Never had that problem with a Yahoo! account.

I don't know for sure about hotmail or anyone else selling emails. I can tell you we don't give or sell emails to anyone.

We have changed around how e-mail works, but there is still one thing up in the air: We either have to link the email you send through UG to your email account or to your UG account. This creates one of two problems:

1) If it is linked to your email account, when you send an email through UG, the recipient will see your email addy to respond. This might lead someone who you send an email to be able to "associate" your email with your screen handle, and then you ( if you are setting up an appointment ).

2) If it is linked to your UG account, then the response must also come through UG, but then if you send someone an emial, but "show email address" is not turned on in your profile, they will not be able to reply to you. You would have to remember to add your email address into the body ov every email you wanted t send through UG in order to get a response.

Which do you guys prefer ?????

option 1 keeps the rights and responsibilities for maintaining the sender's privacy where they belong: with the sender.

with option 2, UG would assume responsibility for being anyone's anonymous remailer. 'nuff said.

The solution that works best for me is to only communicate directly with posters -- i.e., I do not click on the email icon below a post but, rather, send the poster an email from my own email account. Unless I choose to reveal it, the recipient cannot link my email address as well as whatever personal information I decide to reveal with my online handle.

I think (1) is proper.
