Last night, Galopagos on No. 6th St. in Williamsburg instituted a new weekly Monday Night Burlesque series. It's the same kind of neo-burlesque performance art that was pioneered by The Blue Angel (now d/b/a Le Scandal). On the basis of last night, I like this new Williamsburg stuff better than what's currently at Le Scandal,* albeit with some caveats.

I think Galopagos's Monday Night Burlesque is better than Le Scandal because it's fresher. These aren't the same performers who have been doing this for years and years now. It has more of the feel of the early days of The Blue Angel, when it seemed like most of the performers were downtown arts types doing arty exotic dance as a lark rather than members of the sexual underground or sex workers trying to go legit. The numbers were well thought out and very funny.

The downside is that this is being presented more as bar entertainment than as a show. (If you know Galopagos, you'll understand when I say it's in the front room, with the bar, by the pool, rather than in the back room.) So instead of having a continuous performance, they do two numbers at a time and then take long breaks for people to buy drinks. So if you go, make sure you go with especially interesting friends.

Also, unlike the old Blue Angel (which functioned as a normal strip club in the sense that the performers circulated around chatting up customers and trying to sell lap dances), there's no interaction with the performers. (At least none without serious effort.)

Admission is free (the advantage of its being bar entertainment instead of a show).

The Elysian Fields were playing in the Back Room. I have no idea why I didn't go in to hear them.

Oh, and during one of the breaks, the bartender put on Rocket to Russia. I think that for the first time, it finally hit me that Joey is really dead. It's probably because I was a few Manhattans the worse for wear, but I actually teared up.

So yes, I've finally become some middle-aged man who sits drinking in bars in Williamsburg crying over the Ramones.

No, you've become some middle-aged man who sits drinking in bars in Williamsburg crying over the Ramones while taking a break from purient interests and commercial sex.

To me, that actually makes it sound better.

So now nobody can say I've never posted a review.

Is Le Scandal the same thing they put on at the Cutting Room every Saturday for $20 a head?

Galapagos sounds like a good deal ... those Billburg babes rock!

Yes.

(But if you're making value comparisons, don't be misled. At Le Scandal, you get an hour or two of solid entertainment. At Monday Night Burlesque at Galopagos, you get intermittant 10-minute stretches of entertainment, with long gaps between them, dispersed throughout the night. Because I went alone -- a mistake I won't make again -- I only had the patience to stay for a total of 20 minutes of performance -- even though I was there for much more than an hour. I prefer Monday Night Burlesque to Le Scandal because I think Monday Night Burlesque is better. But in terms of value, I actually think it's worse.)

I gotcha.
Sounds like it would be fine, too, if you went there on a date.

Wandered into Monday Night Burlesque at Galapagos late last night and caught (you should excuse the expression) the tail end of Amateur Night.

Unfortunately the one woman I saw was in no way attractive or sexy. But, at least for this particular perv, the thought of the flower of the population of Williamsburg and Greenpoint removing their clothes in my full view is Perv Heaven.*

Wonder if Amateur Night is regular? Wonder if they'll have it again?

that's funny b/c i was walking in the east village last night, and i thought: everyone's so old (and the young ones are SO unhip), where do the people who used to live here live? then i thought to myself: williamsburg. (but, of course, even that is no longer true.)

I don't think Tuesday is themed, so it'll be the luck of the draw.

I have a new stupid theory that by the time I've heard sufficient buzz about a new show somewhere in my neighborhood it's probably already tragically uncool. Thanks a lot, Manhattanite wannabe's!

Somehow I knew you'd get all mad and think I was referring to you. Which I was NOT. Down boy, down.

If I were angling for a Stairmaster, I'd try to be careful about what I say.

Yeah, you're right. I know how you hate being lumped in with the tragically uncool Manhattan crowd. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

N. 6th & what????? Didn't there used to be an elementary school around there? or is this closer to the L train?

Between Whyte and Kent (unless it's between Berry and Whyte, but I think it's one block west of that).

Elementary school wouldn't matter. It's not a strip club or any other kind of "adult" business. It's a regular bar/performance space. (Even the burlesque performers usually wear pasties.)

Pasties are so cool. I don't see enough pasties in my life.
